When it comes to orthodontics, I’ve done a handful of wires and bracket cases, all underneath the guidance of guys I really respect in their craft, some true orthodontists who are well-documented in what they can do. And I’ll turn to them every now and then for a patient that I can’t get to go see them. They’ll basically coach me through the whole thing. But I’ve been involved with Invisalign and clear retainer since the inception of Invisalign. And the process of getting somebody to move their teeth, and it’s great. With all the digital technology we have in CAD/CAM dentistry, you can show people in an hour, or you can bring it back a week later, what their mouth looks like now, what it could potentially look like if we do this.
And I never let anybody make that decision that day. I always make patients go home and think about what they’ve just seen. “Here’s what your teeth look like now. Here’s how many steps it’s going to take. Here’s what they can look like in the end if you’re faithful and you do what you’re told.” I go home and I say, “Okay, you’re going to think about this for a week. Yeah, it’s a good idea now, and that’s why you want me to say, ‘Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.’ You’ve been this way for a while. We’re not going to change it overnight. I want you to think about it for a week. And if a week, you call back with the same answer, then great. Then we’re going to proceed forward.”
And to go through the process of clear aligners, whether it takes 10 aligners or 30 aligners to straighten your teeth, the process is easy. The process is simple. Maintenance is hard. You know, when every week or two weeks, depending on how you set up a case, somebody puts a new tray in your mouth. Every time you put a new tray in somebody’s mouth, you see a change, and you see a change for the better. And then two weeks later or a week, depending on how you’re gonna break it down, every time you put a new tray in, you see a change. And when we see change, it’s easy, right?
Now, people that have dieted and people that have exercised, if you’re seeing change, it’s easy to maintain. It’s when you plateau. And in our case, you plateau at the end. And I believe it’s harder to get people to wear their retainers than it is to actually go through the process. The process is simple. You just gotta follow the rules. If you follow the rules, you’re gonna get a way better smile than what you started with. And that great smile, So many people come in for Invisalign or SureSmile or ClearCorrect, and their goal is cosmetic. But there’s a whole functional aspect to putting teeth into the right position which so benefits that later. And I really push that on people. It’s like, “Hey, the short-term goal is you got a pretty smile. The long-term goal is you have less dental problems over your lifetime if you’re willing to wear your retainers religiously.”
